Local notes

A shoreline of second homes

Chikaming Township, which includes Union Pier, Lakeside and Harbert, caps short-term rental permits at 550 and reports the cap has been reached, with new applicants waiting for the 2027 permit cycle. Renting out a second home here depends on permit availability.

EGLE lists Chikaming and Lake townships among Berrien County areas with designated Lake Michigan high risk erosion areas. New structures there must meet setbacks based on a 30-year projection of shoreline recession (readily movable) or a 60-year projection (not readily movable).

Questions

Questions from Harbor Country owners

Still have a question? Call or text (574) 361-4416, or send it with the form below.

01Which Harbor Country communities do you cover?

Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert and Sawyer under Chikaming Township, plus Three Oaks and Grand Beach, along the southwest Michigan shore.

02Can I still get a short term rental permit in Chikaming Township?

The township says the cap has been reached and no further applications are being accepted. It says the number of available permits will be announced after the renewal period ends on February 1, 2027. Check the township directly, since this can change.

03Do you serve Michigan and Indiana homeowners on the same plan?

Yes. The same plan, record and phone number covers a Harbor Country house and a Hamilton County one.

Nearby, and what it costs

Nearby town not listed? It is almost certainly within reach.
